I am so pleased to announce the publication of a new Longform Lab project, The British are Coming: The Graphic Edition, an adaptation (written by me, Nora!) of the Pulitzer Prize-winning author Rick Atkinson’s seminal history of the American Revolution. It will be published by Penguin Random House/ Ten Speed Press in July 2026. The news first broke in the Associated Press.

I will talk more about the adaptation process in a future blog post, but basically I took Atkinson’s 500 page extremely dense, beautifully written, rigorously researched tome and turned it into TWO graphic novel scripts for a two volume adaptation, each at about ~300 pages. It was a fascinating intellectual challenge for a really important end goal: making this history more accessible for a new group of readers who might not want to parse through the (intimidating!) original prose book.

Even cooler, this is just the first volume of Atkinson’s Revolutionary War trilogy. The second came out earlier this year, which I will also be adapting into two graphic novel volumes. And the third book in the trilogy will probably come out in about 2030, and the intention is to also adapt that into two graphic novels. If you’re keeping track at home, that’s six full books! At least I’ll be booked and busy!

Volume 1 of The British are Coming: The Graphic Edition is available for pre-order now in both hardback and paperback.
